What Is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT is the College Board’s modernized version of the SAT, administered entirely on a computer or tablet using the Bluebook testing application. Launched in March 2024 for U.S. students, the Digital SAT features a shorter test time, adaptive testing technology, and a streamlined two-section format that better reflects the skills students need for college and career readiness.
The exam consists of two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section uses a multistage adaptive design, meaning the difficulty of the second module is determined by your performance on the first module. This adaptive approach allows for a shorter overall test while still providing an accurate measurement of student ability. The total score range remains 400-1600, with each section scored from 200-800.
One of the most significant changes is that students can use a built-in graphing calculator (Desmos) on the entire Math section, eliminating the no-calculator portion of the old test. Reading passages are shorter and each question is paired with its own passage or set of information, rather than long passages with multiple questions. The total testing time is approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes, significantly shorter than the old paper-based SAT.
